Guidance and Counselling

Operational Functions

The Guidance and Counselling Division is charged with the responsibility of providing guidance and counselling services in Botswana's schools, from pre-primary schools to tertiary institutions. The Guidance and Counselling Division is under the Department of Curriculum Development and Evaluation of the Ministry of Education. The Guidance and Counselling Division operates within three different functions:

  • psychological,
  • career
  • field services.

The Psychological Service provides counselling to individuals or groups on a wide range of issues. Clients may refer themselves or be referred by others. The psychological service is offered by professional counsellors within the Division. The service supports schools in the delivery of counselling services.

The Career/ Vocational Service is responsible for a wide range of activities such as gathering and circulating current and up-to-date careers information through booklets and career-fairs, developing career guidance materials, offering career decision making and liasing with other stakeholders to promote some careers and to also help students develop positive attitudes towards all work.

The Field Support Service ensures that there is effective coordination and implementation of the guidance and counselling programme in schools. This is done in conjunction with other field education officers in the Ministry of Education. The Field Support Service provides professional support, advisory service and referral back-ups for the schools.
