Entry Procedure -
School Candidates GA CJSS and Private Schools

1 (a) General
All entries must be made on the entry forms provided by the Examinations, Research and Testing Division. They are normally sent out in January and must be completed and returned to the Examinations, Research and Testing Division by 30 March in the year of examination. Late entries will not be accepted. Entries should be completed in accordance with the instruction issued with the forms and with the current regulations. Entries which are incorrect or incomplete in any way may cause errors and registration for that centre will not take place.

(b) Choice and Number of Subjects to be taken

(i) School candidates must enter and sit for not less than eight subjects at one and the same examination.

(ii) Citizen school candidates must take the six core subjects and at least one of the practical and one general subject. School candidates may not enter for the following subjects without prior permission from the Registrar

(iii) Non-citizen school candidates are not required to take (11) Setswana but can do so if they wish. If not electing to take Setswana, they must take the remaining five core subjects and three options of which one should be from general subjects, one from practical and the third from either one. In addition, the School Head must certify that such students are non- citizens. Proof that these students are not citizens of Botswana should be submitted to the Registrar's office at the time of registration.

(c) Transfer of a candidate

The transfer of a candidate from one centre to another will be allowed provided the request is received at the Registrar's Office by mid September in the year of the examination. No transfer can be made after this date.

School candidates who transfer to private centres will be required to pay the full examination fees paid by private candidates. Requests for such transfers must be accompanied by the correct fees and must be received at the Examinations Office by mid September.

(d) A candidate may not be entered as a school candidate and as a private candidate simultaneously.

(e) Checking of Entry Details

A printed list giving details of each candidate's entries will be returned to centres in June. The printed list must be checked to ensure that all the candidates' entries (name, age, sex, subjects entered, etc.) are correct. The candidates also have to verify this information. A date by which amendments must be returned will be specified. Even if there are no corrections made on the list, the printout should still be returned to the Division.

2. Entry Procedures - Private Candidates only
(a) General

(i) Candidates who are not receiving full-time education at a school may obtain the Junior Certificate in stages.

(ii) Private candidates must write to the Registrar at the beginning of the year, requesting a Private Candidates Entry Form. Their letters must be received at the Examinations Division by the last day of January. However, Private candidates are encouraged to register at study groups or private schools to write the examination. Late entries will not be accepted. Registration forms must be received at the Examinations Division by 30 March.

(iii) Entries from private candidates can be accepted provided such candidates are able to fulfil the requirements of the examinations.

(b) Choice and Number of Subjects to be taken by Private candidates

(i) Private candidates may sit for three or more subjects at any examination. The total number of core and optional subjects required for the award of a certificate is the same as for school candidates, and must be obtained within a period of not more than five years.

(ii) Batswana private candidates who aim to obtain a Junior Certificate in one year must sit for at least eight subjects, including Setswana, English, Mathematics, General Science or Human and Social Biology, Social Studies, Private Agriculture and two optional subjects. Private candidates are advised not to enter for Integrated Science unless they have had regular instruction in practical work in a laboratory. Such candidates will have their results assessed in the same way as school candidates.

(iii) Private candidates may not enter for the following:

3. Examination Fees: and Dates

a) School candidates do not pay examination fees.

b) General Entry Fees for Private Candidates:

Registration Fee: P6.00
Subject Fee: P5.00 per subject

The above fees for each candidate must be forwarded to the Registrar together with the completed Entry Form by 30 March.
