School Registration Unit
The Unit falls under the Division of Planning Statistics
and Research in the Ministry of Education. It is responsible for
the coordination of all work related to the registration and management
of registration information of all schools except tertiary Institutions
and pre-schools.
It is the Ministry of Education's duty to register and continuously
monitor all schools in order to ensure that quality assurance is
implemented in both Government and private educational institutions.
Institutions which operate illegally and those that fail to conform
to and or maintain Government registration standards shall be closed
down in accordance with the Education Act.
Registration and Control of Schools.
No person shall own or manage or give regular instruction at a school, unless that school is registered with the Ministry of Education.
Application for Registration of a Private School
Any person other than the Local Education Authority desirous
of registering a school shall make application using Form 2 obtainable
from the local education authorities.
The completed form together with the following shall be forwarded
to the Local Education Authority for the area in which it is proposed
the school shall be situated.
- A copy of a sketch map showing the location of the school in
relation to main routes, centre of town, city or village.
- A detailed plan of the proposed school buildings.
- Proof of land ownership/certified copy of land board certificate/title
deed. Rented premises are not accepted.
- a project/business plan.
- A certified copy of certificate of incorporation if the applicant
is a company.
- The previous six months bank statement showing the financial
status of the applicant. The applicant should have at least P60
000 if existing buildings are to be used and P260 000 if new buildings
are to be erected.
- Additional infrastructure ( furniture and stationery) and proof
of ownership.
Change in Establishment of a School
No change shall be made in the establishment of any registered school unless permission has been granted by the Ministry of Education.
A change in the establishment of a school means:
- The provision of any additional classes, standard or form whether
or not such class, standard or form is parallel to any existing
class, standard or form in the school.
- The provision of any nature or form of education in the school,
being a nature or form of education different from the nature
or form of education falling within the classification in which
the school is for the time being registered in accordance with
the education act.
- Any change in the ownership of the school.
- Any change in the management of the schoo.l
- The transfer of the school to a new site.
- Change of name of the institution.
- The alteration of any qualification for admission to the school.
Change in Establishment of a Private School
An application for the change in the establishment of a
private school shall be made using Form 4 obtainable from the local
education authority. It is shall be forwarded to the local education
authority for the area, accompanied by the original certificate
of registration of the school.
